The conclusion of Michelangelo Antonioni's informal trilogy on modern malaise, L'eclisse tells the story of a young woman (Monica Vitti) who leaves one lover (Francisco Rabal) only to drift into a relationship with another (Alain Delon). Using the architecture of Rome as a backdrop for the couple's doomed affair, Antonioni reaches the apotheosis of his modernist style, returning to his favorite themes: alienation and the difficulty of finding connections in an increasingly mechanized world. "L'Eclisse" is especially memorable for its strange juxtaposition of the imagery of modern city life (in particular the Stock Exchange scenes; the car running into the river) with that of natural, or more primitive states (Monica Vitti's African dance; the fossilized plant). The start with the alienated couple, as well as parts of Vitti's relationship with Delon, are pure deja-vu. They are themes exhaustingly analyzed in "Night", and in a much larger context. On the other hand Antonioni is ahead of his time here, presenting a series of sequences based on the stock market, where a masterful montage creates a relentless atmosphere of madness & chaos. Monica Vetti is a treasure to behold and I don't think the movie would have worked with a different actress. Francisco Rabal (Nazarin) and Alain Delon do a good job of not interfering with Vetti's magic act. It is a hauntingly beautiful movie that I have not been able to get out of my head. Ultimately though, Antonioni remains an existential philosopher, and as such the ending of the film turns to abstract painting, in a terrifying series of images depicting the inner landscape.
