About the Recording

Norah Jones's debut on Blue Note is a mellow, acoustic pop affair with soul and country overtones, immaculately produced by the great Arif Mardin. (It's pretty much an open secret that the 22-year-old vocalist and pianist is the daughter of Ravi Shankar.) Jones is not quite a jazz singer, but she is joined by some highly regarded jazz talent: guitarists Adam Levy, Adam Rogers, Tony Scherr, Bill Frisell, and Kevin Breit; drummers Brian Blade, Dan Rieser, and Kenny Wolleson; organist Sam Yahel; accordionist Rob Burger; and violinist Jenny Scheinman. Her regular guitarist and bassist, Jesse Harris and Lee Alexander, respectively, play on every track and also serve as the chief songwriters. Both have a gift for melody, simple yet elegant progressions, and evocative lyrics. (Harris made an intriguing guest appearance on Seamus Blake's Stranger Things Have Happened.) Jones, for her part, wrote the title track and the pretty but slightly restless "Nightingale." She also includes convincing readings of Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart," J.D. Loudermilk's "Turn Me On," and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." There's a touch of Rickie Lee Jones in Jones's voice, a touch of Bonnie Raitt in the arrangements; her youth and her piano skills could lead one to call her an Alicia Keys for grown-ups. While the mood of this record stagnates after a few songs, it does give a strong indication of Jones' alluring talents. - David R. Adler

In 2003, Norah Jones took home eight Grammy wins, including four of the evening's top awards. Jones was named best new artist, and her song "Don't Know Why" received the record of the year, song of the year, and best female pop performance awards. Her album Come Away With Me was named album of the year, best pop album, vocal, best engineered album, non-classical, and received a producer of the year award for Arif Mardi.

Thank you dimsal for your efforts, but I've listened carefully to this recording and I'm sorry to say, that there unfortunately is a lot of hiss'es.

I've played this album with 3 different players now (Media Monkey, ZoomPlayer and KMPlayer) all with different decoders and compared with the CD-rip. Have you recorded this with too high volume and afterwards reduced the overall volume with an Amplify filter or so??

I've two decent 24/96 soundcards on my computer and decent headphones Sennheiser HD580 too, so I don't think that this is in my end.....

Many thanks for this.
I ear a little problem in the first song near the end of it, "Don't know why", can it be a problem with my download or the file?

I've downloaded the RS files, but how do I extract the music from them? They have extensions .001, .002, etc, and my Macbook doesn't know what to do with them. I've tried StuffIt Expander, but I get an message saying the archive may be damaged.

I've downloaded lots of stuff from this site, but this is the first time I've come across files like this. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Update: I finally figured it out. The only thing that worked for me was an application called BetterZip for Mac. What a pain though. Why not just use rar files like everybody else? The extracted flac files also have no metadata embedded, so it needs to be entered manually.
Posted By: dimsal Date: 27 Sep 2010 01:22:36
Use 7zip to extract files.

There's no metadata b/c the FLAC files were created from original WAV files which don't have meta data. I don't use FLAC files for playback, I use WAVs, but created FLAC so that you can download faster. Whatever you do after that is your choice.

dimsal, explain please: links here (LP rip) and at your SACD rip page (http://avaxhome.ws/music/jazz/classic_jazz/Norah_Jones__Come_Away_With_Me_96-24_Stereo_SACD.html) are exactly the same.
Posted By: dimsal Date: 05 Oct 2010 10:28:43
good catch. the SACD links are all dead. Those are the LP rip links. I'll try to re-upload, if not I'll just have to deleted that SACD post.
Thanks for letting me know.
Posted By: tolyapsh Date: 05 Oct 2010 15:30:32
Re-upload is much better :) Anyway, thank you for your work.

The state of these archives is asinine. Why take all this time to make a transfer only to foist up files that nobody can open. Retarded.
Posted By: dimsal Date: 24 Apr 2012 02:45:21
@Tommy
If you're not able to open the files - just ask for help, don't be rude. Since you're the ONLY one who seems can't open the files perhaps it's you who are retarded.

jDownloader glued together the parts into one .zip file for me. Nice upgrade from the CD. The changes to the instrumentation can be subtle at times, but the biggest improvement is in Jones' voice. The CD reliably puts a fine coating of steel wool over it that isn't present on the LP. Well done rip, dismal.
Posted By: Goodog Date: 23 May 2012 15:28:51
Okay then, I can't open the files either so can you please tell me how. You said to use 7z but that didn't work at all....sorry, I just don't see how to do it at all...

Try file joining software, such as http://www.hjsplit.org. It's free and safe.
