Metal Slug is a run and gun video game for the Neo-Geo console/arcade platform created by SNK. It was released in 1996 for the MVS arcade platform. The game is widely known for its sense of humour, extremely fluid hand-drawn animation, and fast paced two-player action. It is the first title in the Metal Slug series.

Metal Slug est une série de jeux vidéo d'arcade de type shoot and jump (sous-genre du shoot them up) parue à l'origine sur MVS et Neo-Geo et qui connait un succès grandissant grace à l'émulation. Leurs graphismes détaillés, leurs animations soignées, leur action frénétique et leur humour parodique sont à l'origine de la notoriété des Metal Slug. Le nom Metal Slug est lié à un char d'assaut, utilisable dans le jeu, nommé Super Vehicle-001 et surnommé Metal Slug (littéralement : limace de métal).
