From their stronghold in Icepeak, the evil Queen Juliana and her son Nekron send forth a wave of glaciers, forcing humanity to retreat south towards the equator. Nekron sends a delegation to King Jarol in Firekeep to request his surrender, but this is a ruse orchestrated by Queen Juliana for Nekron’s sub-humans to kidnap Jarol’s daughter, the barefoot, microkini-wearing Princess Teegra (Queen Juliana feels that Nekron should take a bride to produce an heir). But Teegra makes an escape and comes upon Larn, the only survivor of a village razed by glaciers, who offers to escort her back to Firekeep. As Teegra is recaptured, Larn teams with the mysterious Darkwolf to save Teegra and then travel to Icepeak to stop Juliana. Darkwolf faces Nekron and kills him as Icepeak succumbs to lava released by King Jarol and is destroyed. The film finishes with Larn about to kill a sub-human until Teegra stops him saying that "it's over"; Darkwolf is seen atop a cliff and then disappears.

Fire and Ice, released in 1983, was a collaboration between Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta, distributed by 20th Century Fox, which also distributed 1977's Wizards. The animated feature, based on characters Bakshi and Frazetta co-created, was made using the process of rotoscoping, in which scenes were shot in live action and then traced onto animation cels.

The screenplay was written by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas, both of whom had written Conan stories for Marvel Comics. Background painter was James Gurney, the author and artist of the famous Dinotopia illustrated novels. Thomas Kinkade also worked on the backgrounds to various scenes.

He is one of the most important figures in international modern architecture (and in 2007, he turned 100). In this program, Pritzker Prize-winning architect Oscar Niemeyer reflects on his long life and remarkably prolific output, with a focus on his buildings in Brazil’s capital city, Brasília. The definitive portrait of a man both hailed and criticized as a “sculptor of monuments.” Many images of signature structures—designs that infuse his favored material, reinforced concrete, with exuberant liquidity—are included.

Quazi Delict Records QDR009

Mythematica is an alter ego of an original artist and a talented music producer Daniel Špaček (31). During three incredibly short years he managed to find a key to transform his fanciful, surrealistic video projections and visual compositions, well-known among the Czech psytrance community, into a musical language as well. “No matter what I'm doing, one or the other, the latter component is always there. When I'm drawing images I always listen to music, ideally music that matches what I want or need to draw. On the other hand, when composing music I always see the visual representation of what I'm doing,” Dan explains his bipolar creative process. The fruit of his exploration is a surprisingly mature, mostly ambient eponymous debut album. Not surprisingly, in this context, the album's content is absolutely in line with its perfect cover.

Yes: House of Yes - Live from the House of Blues (DVD video) [2000]

Yes: House of Yes - Live from the House of Blues (DVD video) [2000]
DVD9 PAL ISO + MDS | audio DD 2.0 & 5.1 | Symphonic Prog | ~112 min | 6.86 Gb | hr cover & label incl.

Too often dismissed as dinosaurs of the progressive-rock movement of the 1970s, Yes aimed to revive their former glory with their 1999 album, The Ladder. Veteran producer Bruce Fairbairn specifically urged the band to return to the sound that made it famous-poetic lyrics, thickly layered fusion of guitar, bass, keyboards, and sophisticated melodic structures. Whether Yes achieved its goal is subject to debate, but die-hard Yes-philes will surely agree this is the finest video presentation of this enduring band and its music. The Dolby Digital 5.1-channel audio is exquisitely distinct, showcasing the seasoned musicianship of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire, drummer Alan White, and next generation Yes members Igor Khoroshev (replacing Rick Wakeman on keyboards) and Billy Sherwood (who later left the band) on guitar.

After 30 years as Yes frontman and vocalist, Jon Anderson leads in fine form. His mellow enthusiasm is genuine, and this 15-song set (recorded at the Las Vegas House of Blues club) catches the band on a very good night. Squire is a playful match to Howe's reliable precision, and the best of the new songs (particularly "Homeworld" [The Ladder]) are almost as good as the classics. And while the Bob Marley tribute song "The Messenger" is best forgotten, few could deny that Yes has indeed retained its vitality after all these years. In addition to interviews with all the band members (except White), impressive extra features on the DVD include a Dolby 5.1 version of the "Homeworld" album track, accompanied by computer-animated excerpts from the "Homeworld" CD-ROM game, and an HTML version of the Yesworld Web site. A conspicuous effort to attract a new generation of cyber-savvy fans? Perhaps, but if this terrific DVD is any indication, Yes needn't worry about passing into obscurity.
