Ludger H. Viefhues-Bailey, "Beyond the philosopher's fear: a Cavellian reading of gender, origin and religion in modern skepticism".
Publisher: Ashgate Publishing | ISBN: 0754655229 | 2007 edition | PDF | 177 Pages | 1.12 MB

Based on a detailed analysis of gender in Stanley Cavell's treatment of the skeptical problem, this book addresses the relationship between gender and religion in modern skepticism. Engaging in dialogue with Julia Kristeva's philosophy, Viefhues claims that a religious problem underlies Cavell's understanding of the feminine. The feminine which the skeptic fears is construed as a placeholder for the beyond, marking the transcendence of our origins which are elusive yet at the same time part of ourselves. It is argued that a religious question of origins thus lies at the heart of the modern skeptical problem.
John Rawls's pioneering work of political philosophy A Theory of Justice has had far reaching influence on modern liberal political philosophy. Rawls' sprinciples of justice as fairness: the principle of liberty, the principle of fair equality of opportunity and the famous 'difference principle' have been both heavily criticized and incorporated into other political theories. In this book Paivansalo both presents a deep analysis of the whole Rawlsian canon and builds upon and goes beyond Rawls's conception by introducing a fresh theoretical framework to clarify and modify different balances of the elements of Rawlsian justice.

Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004150188 | 2006 edition | PDF | 304 Pages | 2.31 MB

This book uses the case studies of Liverpool and Philadelphia to investigate the nature of the British-Atlantic trading community between 1760 and 1810. By using a wide definition of the term ‘trader’, this work stresses the role of lesser traders, including women, in the distribution of goods around the Atlantic. Through comparing and contrasting these trading communities, it highlights the different structures of the economies of these cities during this period of conflict and change. However, by using the concepts of networks of people, credit and goods, this book also demonstrates how a common business mentalite inextricably bound these trading communities together, even as Philadelphia struggled to free itself from the legacy of its colonial past.

Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0199249199 | 2005 edition | PDF | 472 Pages | 6.02 MB

Simon Hornblower argues for a relationship between Thucydides and Pindar not so far acknowledged in modern scholarship. He argues that ancient critics were right to detect stylistic similarities between these two great exponents of the "severe style" in prose and verse. In Part One he explores the background of epinikian poetry and athletics, the values shared by the two authors, and religion and colonization myths, and presents a geographically organized survey of Pindar's Mediterranean world, exploiting onomastic evidence.

Publisher: University of California Press | ISBN: 0520052226 | 1984 edition | PDF | 280 Pages | 21.70 MB

Those going to this book for traditional feminist theology may come away disappointed. It can perhaps be understood more as a critique of certain strains of feminism than an endorsement. Observe how Bynum, perhaps the most respected medievalist in the United States, sheds considerable doubt on some standard Seminary mythology: "It was not women who originated female images of God.... such language is in no way the special preserve of female writers... There is no reason to assert, as some have done, that the theme of the motherhood of God is a 'feminine insight.' Moreover it is not at all clear, although many scholars assume it, that women are particularly drawn to feminine imagery" (140).

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, thousands of ordinary women and men experienced evangelical conversion and turned to a certain form of spiritual autobiography to make sense of their lives. This book traces the rise and progress of conversion narrative as a unique form of spiritual autobiography in early modern England. After outlining the emergence of the genre in the seventeenth century and the revival of the form in the journals of the leaders of the Evangelical Revival...

St. Birgitta of Sweden (1303-1373, canonized 1391) was one of the most charismatic and influential female visionaries of the later Middle Ages. Altogether, she received some 700 revelations. They deal with a variety of subjects, from meditations on the human condition, domestic affairs in Sweden, and ecclesiastical maters in Rome, to revelations in praise of the Incarnation and devotion to the Virgin. Her Revelations, collected and ordered by her confessors, circulated widely throughout Europe and long after her death. Many eminent individuals, including Cardinal Juan Torqemada and Martin Luther, read and commented on her writings, which influenced the spiritual lives of countless individuals. Birgitta was also the founder of a new contemplative order, which still exists. She is the patron saint of Sweden, and in 2000 was declared (with Catherine of Siena and Edith Stein) the first co-patroness of Europe.

Saki is the acknowledged master of the short story. His writing is elegant, economical, and witty, its tone worldly, flippant irreverence delivered in astringent exchanges and epigrams more neat, pointed, and poised even than Wilde's. The deadpan narrative voice allows for the unsentimental recitation of horrors and the comically grotesque, and the generation of guilty laughter at some very un-pc statements.

Andrea O'Reilly Herrera, "Cuba: Idea of a Nation Displaced ".
Publisher: State University of New York Press | ISBN: 0791471993 | 2007 edition | PDF | 360 Pages | 2.29 MB

In Cuba, internationally renowned artists, philosophers, and writers reflect on the idea of a nation displaced. Featuring contributions from Isabel Alvarez Borland, Antonio Benitez-Rojo, Maria Cristina Garcia, William Navarrete, Eliana Rivero, Rafael Rojas, and Carlos Victoria, as well as many others, Cuba is a rich collection of essays, testimonials, and interviews that reveal the complex, often antagonistic cultural and political debates coexisting within the Cuban exile population.
