This monograph originated with a seminar I gave at UCLA in Winter 1972. I wrote an extended first draft of the first seven chapters in Spring 1972, while on leave from teaching on a Sloan Fellowship, and in Summer 1972, while on a research grant from the National Science Foundation. The project was mostly finished in the fall of that year, while I was teaching a course on Inductive Definability at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

This chapter may require, if not more maturity, at least more stamina on the part of the reader than the preceding chapters. However, a familiarity with the contents of the fourth chapter should provide adequate foundation for a further study of Carle-son's work on the a.e. convergence of Fourier series and the subsequent work of R. Hunt. These notes do not aspire to be a complete account of almost everywhere convergence results. The basic criterion followed in the selection of the topics has been that the author felt he could at least make a contribution in the exposition of the material, when not in the content.

For most of World War II, British tank development remained faithful to the design philosophy inaugurated during World War I. Experiences in North Africa highlighted flaws in this basic design, however, and the General Staff identified the need for a new heavy cruiser that could combine speed and manoeuvrability with increased armour and armament. The Cromwell Cruiser tank was designed as a result and soon proved itself one of the fastest and most successful tanks deployed by the Allies during World War II.

During the Napoleonic Wars the region of Hesse was divided between Hessen-Kassel and Hessen-Darmstadt. Under Napoleon's patronage, in 1806 Hessen-Darmstadt received all remaining imperial possessions within its borders and was elevated to a Grand Duchy. That same year, Hessen-Kassel, under Imperial Elector Wilhelm I, was dissolved and incorporated into Jerome Bonaparte's Kingdom of Westphalia, resulting in significant political, administrative and sartorial changes.

Mercenaries were a common feature throughout most of Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries, and had been known far earlier. But nowhere did such a sophisticated system of hiring, payment and organisation of mercenaries develop as it did in Italy. The condottiere – whose name came from the condotta or contract between himself and his employer – was the result.

Though the 'Scythian period' in the history of Eastern Europe lasted little more than 400 years, the impression these horsemen made upon the history of their times was such that a thousand years after they had ceased to exist as a sovereign people, their heartland and the territories which they dominated far beyond it continued to be known as 'greater Scythia'.

Although light infantry tactics formed one of the cornerstones of Napoleonic warfare, their employment was by no means restricted to Light regiments.
