Written in his ninth decade and premiered in 1975, Gál’s Fourth and final Symphony is scored for chamber orchestra and akin to a concerto grosso. Amazing: Although the six string quartets Opus 3 by Manuel Canales Braulio (1747-1786) experienced their first publication in London, the composer is not listed in the New Grove (1980). The more important are the notes by the first violinist of the Munich Cambini Quartet in the booklet. Canales worked primarily at the Cathedral of Toledo and at the court of the Duke of Alba in Madrid. His quartets are influenced by Haydn and Boccherini, but also have a certain Spanish flair.

"The Great Journey" is Colin Matthews' largest vocal work, running to nearly forty minutes. It is a setting of a condensation of the report by Alvar Nu-ez Cabeza de Vaca (c 1490 - c 1560) to Emperor Charles V. Cabeza de Vaca was part of a ill-planned Spanish expedition seeking the legendary (and unsubstantiated) treasures of Florida. The expedition shipwrecked. Left for dead in the swampy land, he was rescued by and lived among the Indians. He found three other stranded Spaniards. Together they made an incredible journey back to Spanish territory, travelling through totally unknown lands from Florida to Mexico, arriving at Spanish settlements nine years after their fleet left Spain......

Theodor Grigoriu (born in Galaţi, Moldavia, in 1926) is one of the major Romanian composers in the period after Enescu. His vast output is little known outside his own country, although it includes oratorios, symphonies, cantatas, chamber music, film-scores and much more. His musical roots reach back to Romanian folk-music and to the modal melodies of ancient Byzantium – as in this large-scale triptych, Byzantium after Byzantium, which consists of a violin concerto, a sonata for solo violin and a sonata for violin and piano.
