On the publication of Orthodoxy in 1908, Wilfrid Ward hailed G. K. Chesterton as a prophetic figure whose thought was to be classed with that Burke, Butler, Coleridge, and John Henry Newman. When Chesterton died in 1936, T. S. Eliot pronounced that 'Chesterton's social and economic ideas were the ideas for his time that were fundamentally Christian and Catholic'. But how did he come by these ideas? Eliot noted that Chesterton attached 'significance also to his development, to his beginnings as well as to his ends, and to the movement from one to the other'. It is on that development that this book is focused.

Music in Renaissance Ferrara 1400-1505: The Creation of a Musical Center in the Fifteenth Century
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 019537827X | edition 2009 | PDF | 432 pages | 6,46 mb

Based on extensive documentary and archival research,Music in Renaissance Ferrarais a study of the rise of music at a vital center of Italian Renaissance culture, focusing on the patrons and musicians whose efforts gave Ferrara a primary role in European music during the fifteenth century. The successive rulers of the Italian city-state, members of the Este dynasty, brought to Ferrara some of the most important composers of the period, including Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Martini, Jacob Obrecht, and Josquin Desprez. Moreover, Ferrara has long been famous as the seat of activity of three of the most important poets of the period - Boiardo, Ariosto, and Tasso - as well as for its school of painting and manuscript production and illumination. With Lewis Lockwood's Music in Renaissance Ferrara, the city-state steps forward as a major musical center as well. Winner of the Otto Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society for its original 1985 edition, this current paperback edition of Music in Renaissance Ferrara features a new preface that re-introduces the book and reflects on its contribution to our modern knowledge of music in the culture of the Italian Renaissance.

This is the story of Rupert T. Gould (1890-1948), the polymath and horologist. A remarkable man, Lt Cmdr Gould made important contributions in an extraordinary range of subject areas throughout his relatively short and dramatically troubled life. From antique clocks to scientific mysteries, from typewriters to the first systematic study of the Loch Ness Monster, Gould studied and published on them all. With the title The Stargazer, Gould was an early broadcaster on the BBC's Children's Hour when, with his encyclopaedic knowledge, he became known as The Man Who Knew Everything. Not surprisingly, he was also part of that elite group on BBC radio who formed The Brains Trust, giving on-the-spot answers to all manner of wide ranging and difficult questions...

You know the stories, you love the characters, but do you know the story behind the writer? When Ann M. Martin was asked to write the first four Baby-sitters Club books in 1985, she had no way of knowing she was about to change the face of children’s publishing. Martin’s writing is influenced by a combination of her “pretty wonderful childhood”, her experience as a teacher, and her work in children’s publishing. Now, 20 years after the first Baby-sitters Club book was written, with over 300 books and a Newbery Honor book to her credit, Martin continues to write novels that not only find a place on best-sellers lists, but also in the hearts of readers. It is clear that Ann M. Martin is one of the most widely read and beloved children’s authors of all time. In a one-volume reference, Ann M. Martin details the life and real-life influences of this famous author, revealing the person behind the words, and the author behind the literature we love.

Virtual History and the Bible
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004115552 | edition 1999 | PDF | 204 pages | 39,6 mb

What if Merneptah's scribes were telling the truth when they claimed "Israel has been laid waste?" What if the exodus and conquest had really happened? What if we had no Assyrian account of Sennacherib's third campaign of the palace reliefs depicting his capture of Lachish? What if the Chronicler did use the Deuteronomistic History? What if Luke had never met Theophilus? What if Paul had travelled east rather than west? This is not fantasy of fiction. The 16 essays in this volume engage in serious scholarly enquiry into alternative historical scenarios and their potential consequences. The result is a trenchant demonstration of the ways historians set about working with the evidence in order to reconstruct the past.
