Wilhelm Gesenius, D.R. Meyer - Hebräisches und Aramäisches Handwörterbuch über das Alte Testament
Springer | ISBN: 3540683631 | 2007-01 | PDF | 328 pages | 3.46 Mb

Max Niemeyer Verlag | ISBN: 348452345X | 2008-10-20 | PDF | 433 pages | 1.43 Mb

Youth media present socio-cultural tendencies which young people reflect in their language and thus often set linguistic trends. Or does it work the other way round? In either case, there is a close connection between youth culture and youth language, which in Catalonia is heightened by the encounter between two languages and cultures, Spanish and Catalan. Against his background, the author contrasts and compares linguistic products of young Catalans with the language used in youth broadcasts and publications in Catalan communication media.

Chris Knight - Blood Relations: Menstruation and the Origins of Culture
Yale University Press | ISBN: 0300049110 | 1991-11-27 | PDF | 581 pages | 32.10 Mb

The emergence of human culture is generally traced to the development of a social order in which males hunted large game animals and females had access to the meat. This book presents a new theory of how this culture originated. Integrating perspectives of evolutionary biology and social anthropology within a Marxist framework, Christopher Knight rejects the common assumption that human culture was a gradual extension of primate behaviour and argues instead that it was the product of an immense social, sexual, and political revolution spearheaded by women. Culture became established, says Knight, when women realized that men armed with hunting weapons could not be trusted to share the spoils of the hunt with women and offspring...

Kingsley Amis - The King's English: A Guide to Modern Usage
HarperCollins Publishers Ltd | ISBN: 0006387462 | 1998-03-02 | PDF | 288 pages | 13.60 Mb

Posthumously published, the great man's trenchant, provocative and authoritative guide to the use and abuse of the English language. Sir Kingsley Amis, who died in 1995, occupied a unique position in the world of English letters: elder statesman, former angry young man, latter-day curmudgeon and, above all, comic novelist of genius. In all his work, and throughout his life, the use and abuse of the English language was one of his principal concerns. The King's English pungently, entertainingly and concisely conveys his love and knowledge of the subject to new generations of readers and writers. Here can be found all those linguistic pitfalls ('crescendo', 'disinterested', 'enormity') which lie in wait for the ignorant or the careless. And if you've ever wondered whether it's acceptable to start a sentence with 'and', or what you risk revealing about yourself by your pronunciation of 'liqueur', or whether or not to cross your 7s in the French style, Amis has the answer. By turns reflective, acerbic, combative and controversial, The King's English will find a place on the shelves of anyone who values the English language and cares about the way in which it is used.

A rich series of geographically diverse case studies examining the historical and theoretical issues involved in the study of urban African languages. "The Languages of Urban Africa" consists of a series of case studies, framed by introductory and concluding chapters, which address four main themes. The first is the history of African urban languages. The second set of case studies focuses on theoretical issues in the study of African urban languages, exploring the outcomes of intense multilingualism and also the ways in which urban dwellers form their speech communities. The volume then moves on to explore the relationship between language and identity in the urban setting. The final two case studies in the volume address the evolution of urban languages in Africa.

Sarah L. Pallas - Developmental Plasticity of Inhibitory Circuitry
Springer | ISBN: 1441912428 | 2009-12-08 | PDF | 192 pages | 2.87 Mb

Neuroscience has long been focused on understanding neural plasticity in both development and adulthood. Experimental work in this area has focused almost entirely on plasticity at excitatory synapses. A growing body of evidence suggests that plasticity at inhibitory GABAergic and glycinergic synapses is of critical importance during both development and aging.
The book brings together the work of researchers investigating inhibitory plasticity at many levels of analysis and in several different preparations. This topic is of wide relevance across a number of different areas of research in neuroscience and neurology. Medical problems such as epilepsy, mental illness, drug abuse, and movement disorders can result from malfunctioning inhibitory circuits. Further, the maturation of inhibitory circuits may trigger the onset of critical periods of neural circuit plasticity, raising the possibility that such plastici periods could be reactivated for medical benefit by manipulating inhibitory circuitry.
