Organisations, of all kinds, are facing the challenge of rapidly advancing technologies, and ever-increasing levels of competition, both nationally and globally. They are also seeking to operate in an environment where the traditional relationships between employer and employee are rapidly changing.

Learning to harness the talents of everyone comprising an organisation is critical to sustainable organisational effectiveness. Successfully developing the talents of all members of an organization is, arguably, the only lasting source of competitive advantage.

This handbook provides a unique and authoritative review of relevant research, theoretical developments, and current best practice in the management of individual development.

Highlights the hazards facing intellectual property protection in the information age.* IBM estimates profits from licensing technologies in 2000 were $1.5 billion.* US pharma industries estimate losses of $500 million a year due to poor patent protection.* International in its scope, includes international enforcement mechanisms* Uses case studies and examples to support the text. The value of today's businesses is in the collective knowledge and innovation of their employees and leaders. Consequently, intellectual property (IP) protection has become the focus of considerable legal and regulatory attention, at both national and international levels. This exploration of the rapid development of IP in the global economy reveals theft, piracy and infringements of IP rights at every level, from the state to the individual. Curtis Cook examines the less desirable players on the world stage, why they choose to defy the law, how the rest of the world is responding, and how you can survive and thrive in this environment. On the way he looks at the way that intellectual property rights have rapidly expanded in the last 100 years, how intellectual assets have become the new wealth, how global IP enforcers are losing the battle to protect intellectual property against rogue nations, why intellectual property at cyberspeed is a different game, and how the intellectual property regime is being undermined.Fully international in its scope and subject matter, "Patents, Profits and Power" highlights the hazards facing intellectual property protection in the information age. Java, XML, and JAXP
Publisher: Wiley | ISBN: 0471209074 | edition 2002-01-25 | PDF | 216 pages | 12,25 mb

A nuts-and-bolts guide focusing exclusively on Sun's Java XML API
The sole purpose of Sun Microsystem's Java XML API is to write programs that generate XML data for transmission and programs that decipher incoming XML data. While there are many references on the market offering exhaustive coverage of Java, XML, and the JAXP, until now there were none dedicated to providing developers and IT professionals with instant access to critical, drill-down information on how to use the Java XML API to transmit, receive, create, load, and modify XML documents. Arthur Griffith offers clear and concise coverage of the underlying theory involved and uses numerous examples to demonstrate the API's various features and capabilities.
Companion Web site includes all examples from the book along with a valuable resource listing.

Motivated Reinforcement Learning: Curious Characters for Multiuser Games
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540891862 | edition 2009-09-01 | PDF | 206 pages | 10,2 mb

Motivated learning is an emerging research field in artificial intelligence and cognitive modelling. Computational models of motivation extend reinforcement learning to adaptive, multitask learning in complex, dynamic environments – the goal being to understand how machines can develop new skills and achieve goals that were not predefined by human engineers. In particular, this book describes how motivated reinforcement learning agents can be used in computer games for the design of non-player characters that can adapt their behaviour in response to unexpected changes in their environment.

This book covers the design, application and evaluation of computational models of motivation in reinforcement learning. The authors start with overviews of motivation and reinforcement learning, then describe models for motivated reinforcement learning. The performance of these models is demonstrated by applications in simulated game scenarios and a live, open-ended virtual world.

Researchers in artificial intelligence, machine learning and artificial life will benefit from this book, as will practitioners working on complex, dynamic systems – in particular multiuser, online games.

Index of Verb Forms in Thucydides
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004164391 | edition 2007 | PDF | 242 pages | 1,3 mb

This index lists all verb forms in Thucydides, with the total number of occurrences of the verbs and crossreferences to the compounds. Two appendices provide lists of verb forms that are attested in the mss. but have been removed by conjecture from the printed text and of all attested variant readings. In providing easy access to the verb system as it is attested in Thucydides, it is an invaluable tool for research into the verb system in Thucydides in particular and in Ancient Greek in general, on matters of lexicography or morphology, and more particularly on various aspects of the semantics of the verb system, such as the use of aspectual forms and that of the moods and voices.
