Rossini - Mose in Egitto (Roberto Abbado, Alex Esposito, Sonia Ganassi) [2012]

Rossini might have dressed his opera in biblical garb, but it is still a story of the conflict of love and patriotic duty that had become the basis of Italian opera. That the plight of the Jews in Egypt is a mirror image of all that is happening today in the Middle East has sparked director, Graham Vick, to think afresh about the opera, the enclosed booklet delving into his thought process, as the present day political and religious leaders use ordinary people as pawns to satisfy their own personal agenda for power. In its original form the Egyptian Pharoh’s son, Osiride, falls in love with the Israelite girl, Elcia and that is about to come to an end when the Pharoh is minded to give the Israelites their freedom to leave Egypt. Now he has to reverse that decision to keep his loved one in Egypt by all means possible...

Don Giulio does not want his sons to go anywhere near women until they are 40. Pippetto is young and geeky and seems to have the hots for the maid, Leonarda; the other son, Enrico, already is secretly married to Gilda and they have a baby. The latter two confide in the boys' tutor, Don Gregorio, who hides the charming and seductive Gilda in his room. Leonarda hates Gregorio (he mocks her and reminds her of how old she is) and tells Pippetto to tell Don Giulio that the tutor is harboring a woman. Confusion ensues.

Rossini - La Gazzetta (Maurizio Barbacini) [2006]

The failure of the opera was attributed to the plot that was considered old-fashioned and complex. The action takes place in Paris at the inn of Filippo. Alberto, a young, wealthy man who is searching for a wife, reads an advertisement in the Gazette in which Don Pomponio has placed an ad offering his daughter in marriage to a worthy suitor. Pomponio arrives at the inn and is teased by the crowd for his pretentiousness.

Verdi - Otello (Antoni Ros- Marba, Jose Cura, Krassimira Stoyanova) [2006]

This production left me feeling that the parts were greater than the whole. A great production of "Otello" has the feel of one long sustained piece of music, as opposed to the more typical operatic structure of spoken or sung recitative broken up by arias and ensemble pieces. When "Otello" is done right, I must remind myself to breath because, from the moment the orchestra begins Act I with the dissonant crashing chord that ushers in the storm scene, the action moves "as one" to the tragic end. This production, though, has a choppy feel, not quite doing justice to Verdi's innovative, flowing style. And yet the individual performances (the "parts") are so compelling, that it still rates a strong four stars…

The Enchanted Island (William Christie) [2012]

The Enchanted Island has hitched itself to the eighteenth century pasticcio tradition, a conglomeration of old music set to a new story. But it’s a 21st-century creation through and through, as I think its creators would readily acknowledge. Jeremy Sams is responsible for the libretto. In a rewrite of The Tempest, Prospero is situated on the titular island (which makes whooshing noises identical to the one on Lost) and must confront the challenges of age, Ariel, and his lady-rival Sycorax (who is already dead in the Shakespeare)…

Vivaldi - Motezuma (Alan Curtis, Marijana Mijanovic, Roberta Invernizzi) [2006]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOGs | Scans | 3cd, 954.89 MB
Classical | Deutsche Grammophon | 00289 477 5996

In the past five or six years, the recording industry has been very generous with baroque opera, in general, and Vivaldi's operas in specific (despite the well known crisis of classical music recordings). It has to do with all the research that has been done about this field and the Vivaldi's operas that have been found... Motezuma is the latest recording addition to this operatic side of Vivaldi's music and it is presented as a first world premiere of the original opera with some reconstruction for the recitativos. (In 1992 Jean- Claude Malgoire's make a recording of a pasticcio with the name of Montezuma, using music from cantantas, serenatas and other Vivaidi Operas).

Vivaldi - Violin Concertos (Giuliano Carmignola, Andrea Marcon) [2008]
EAC Rip | FLAC, IMG+CUE, LOG | Scans | 3cd, 972.00 MB
Classical | Label: Brilliant Classics | Catalog Number: 93091

Dutch label Brilliant tends to issue giant budget box sets, with mixed results. This one, collecting a group of 1990s recordings originally appearing on the small Divox label from Switzerland, has some of the characteristic flaws, but it actually assembles three discs' worth of music that belongs together in a single program. What you get here is an unusually broad range of insight into Vivaldi as a programmatic or representational composer. The program begins with the most famous Vivaldi work of all, programmatic or not, the four violin concertos known as Le Quattro Stagioni or the Four Seasons...

Riccardo Muti conducts a fine cast in the powerful and atmospheric 1991 production of Verdi’s ninth opera, whose story of the heroic tussle between Ezio, a Roman general, and Attila, the Nordic invader was written for the 1846 Teatro la Fenice season and premiered there to huge acclaim.

Rossini - La Gazza Ladra (Lu Jia) [2008]
NTSC 16:9 (720x480) VBR Auto Pan&Scan | Italiano (LPCM, 2 ch); (Dolby AC3, 6 ch) | 6,57+6,64Gb (2*DVD9)
Classical | Label: Dynamic | Sub: Italiano, English, Francais, Deutsch, Espanol | 201 min

By Rossini’s time this genre was classified into a rigidly defined series of conventions: a drama with a happy ending, in which the innocent victim, unjustly condemned, should be saved from the scaffold at the eleventh hour and the rascal persecutor punished. The social setting of these operas always delt with a conflict between a feudal aristocracy ( that in La Gazza Ladra is replaced by arrogant welders of power ) and a world of humble people , nearly always peasants. - Known as ’The Thieving Magpie’ in English, La Gazza Ladra deals with a servant girl accused of stealing some silverware with which the magpie of the title has actually absconded for its nest. Seemingly lightweight, the opera was rooted in a true story in which a young woman was actually put to death for the bird’s ”crime”.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 – 28 July 1741), nicknamed il Prete Rosso ("The Red Priest") because of his red hair, was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice. Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, as well as sacred choral works and over 40 operas. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons... wikipedia

Handel’s ninth major opera for London, Alessandro was written as a showcase for the “Rival Queens”, the two famous Italian sopranos – Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni – whose supposed enmity, both personal and professional, not only generated good publicity for Handel’s latest opera but also added extra dramatic frisson to the two divas’ jealous clashes on stage...

This recording of Artaserse by Leonardo Vinci (1690-1730) – born in Naples and, during his short life, celebrated as one of Italy’s leading composers of opera – represents the fourth Virgin Classics collaboration between countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic and conductor Diego Fasolis. It follows an album of Handel arias, Handel’s opera Faramondo and, in 2011, Vivaldi’s opera Farnace – “The performance fairly crackles, with accomplished singing by the flamboyant countertenor Max Emanuel Cencic in the virtuoso title role,” said the Telegraph in the UK...

Arthaus presents a production of Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri by renowned opera stage director Andrei Serban and conducted by Bruno Campanella from the prestigious Opéra National de Paris.
The excellent cast of singer-actors was led by international mezzo-star Jennifer Larmore who, with her unaffected contact with the audience, beautiful voice and excellent acting, is central to this staging. The American singer has acquired a reputation as a Rossini specialist, and is no stranger to inventive stagings of the composer’s comedies...

Verdi’s Jerusalem is not merely a version of I Lombardi. It is so different to its progenitor that Verdi wished to have an Italian translation of this French work introduced to La Scala as a new piece. The full story is clearly explained in Alexandra Maria Dielitz’s excellent notes to this DVD. This production was filmed at the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. It is sung in French and, appropriately, conducted by a Frenchman, Michel Plasson. Most of the singers are Italian, presumably members of the Carlo Felice theatre company...
