The plot to Il burbero di buon cuore was taken from a 1771 play by Goldoni, Le bourru bienfaisant. As with all of Goldoni’s mature comedies, stereotypes of commedia dell’arte and old Roman farce are humanized with vivid personal detail. Thus, the Bartolo-like antagonist, Ferramondo, isn’t a conventional blusterer, but a kindly, well-intentioned man who is easily irritated and possesses a hair-trigger temper. His niece, Angelica, is too frightened to do more than equivocate before her uncle. This, of course, only drives him quickly up a wall... Barry Brenesal

For Handel’s Serse, Christophe Rousset casted a female singer in the role of Xerxes, which was written for the soprano castrato Caffarelli. Paula Rasmussen is the star in this acclaimed production live from the Semperoper, Dresden, directed for stage by Michael Hampe. Superbly performed under the baton of Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques, this is an elegant and charming production with an outstanding cast...

The "Scala Academy Project" has chosen an opera by Donizetti never before performed on the Scala stage. Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali (Viva la mamma !) is a dramma giocoso which premiered in Naples in 1827. Italian actor, director and writer Antonio Albanese, a true master of wit and satire, made his debut as opera director.

Giacomo Puccini is very well served in this production of Il Trittico. I've never had the luxury of seeing all three operas together. I saw Suor Angelica in San Francisco around 1990 with Leona Mitchell (paired with I Pagliacci) and Gianni Schicchi in Los Angeles a couple of years ago with Samuel Ramey (paired with Bartok's Blubeard's Castle). When I watched this video, I was not expecting Renata Scotto or any of the others. Amarilli Nizza more than holds her own vocally and dramatically, as well as the uniformly good cast. The singing, conducting, staging & video quality are all excellent...

“Serreau knows how to use her mostly young cast to get a laugh without being silly and it was the right theatrical touch for this delicious masterpiece. With singing that ranged from good to great, it made for an appealing evening.” MusicWeb International

There is no shortage on DVD of famous opera performers pairing up to play Adina and Nemorino in L'Elisir d'Amore: Kathleen Battle and Luciano Pavarotti; the Alagnas (Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto); Anna Netrebko and her favorite onstage partner, Rolando Villazon. All of these productions have much to commend them, but my favorite is this one from the Arena Sferisterio in Macerata with not a single famous performer in it!

This production, by Andrei Serban with sets and costumes by Michael Yeargan, originally was conceived for the Welsh National Opera in a co-production with the Netherlands Opera, and it was premiered in Cardiff in 1982. It also appeared with great success at Covent Garden 10 years later. The present video is of a performance given at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, to which the production traveled in 2001 as part of the Bellini bicentennial celebration.

“Domingo's clarion (though stretched) Aeneas and Norman's passionate Cassandra are most memorable. Troyanos does not match Gardiner's Susan Graham, but Levine is admirably epic and provides the traditional finale.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2007 ****

A fake death, a perverse woman and a pure woman, a man torn between them, a murder: the story of Edgar, Giacomo Puccini’s second opera, is full of dramatic turns of events. Arthaus Musik presents this powerful and tragic opera now in a version which was count for lost for nearly 120 years.
For the first time the original version in four acts of Edgar by Giacomo Puccini was staged at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 2008. Thanks to the rediscovery of the manuscript score, after 119 years since the first and only performance in Milan in 1889 and after numerous versions condensing the opera in three acts, it will be again possible to experience the original opera that Puccini wrote...

It can be truly said of Adelaide di Borgogna that, like a rose, it bloomed but a day - l’espace d’un matin.’ First performed in Rome on 27 December 1817, it enjoyed very few revivals. In 2011 the Rossini Festival in Pesaro presented the second staged performance of Adelaide di Borgogna since 1825. It stars sought-after mezzo Daniela Barcellona as Ottone, young Australian soprano Jessica Pratt, who possesses a natural-born bel canto voice, in the role of Adelaide, and Bogdan Mihai gives proof of his versatile coloratura-tenor...

I recently reviewed the Opus Arte DVD of Madama Butterfly, with Cheryl Barker as Cio-Cio-San and Edo De Waart conducting. This TDK effort is superior in practically every way. The Opus Arte was by no means a weak effort, mind you, even if it featured an odd stage production by Robert Wilson. This Zeffirelli creation is big, splashy, just the kind of thing you've come to expect from this versatile master. The lead singers, especially Fiorenza Cedolins and Marcello Giordani, are absolutely splendid. I can easily see how this Butterfly could become the DVD of choice among Puccini devotees. Indeed, I've even read comments on various websites hailing this as the definitive Butterfly on DVD. I wouldn't dispute the claim. I could even endorse it...

“What a pleasure to listen to Demetrio e Polibio”, wrote major Italian daily “La Stampa” after the premiere of Rossini‘s very first opera at the 2010 Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, attributing it “an undeniable fascination“. The work was given its first performance in Rome in 1812. It is still unclear whether Rossini was 14 or 18 when he wrote it; what is beyond doubt, however, is the anticipation of great things to come...Making Of Demetrio e Polibio

This is a beatifully sung, but, on the whole, unremarkable performance.
Elina Garanca is the highlight in the title role. She exhibits a lovely voice, excellent technique and beguiling acting. Indeed, she's the best part of this persentation. Lawrence Brownlee sings beautifully, but it's hard to overlook the disadvantages of his stature. His Dandini towers over him and even Cenerentola is much taller than he.

When one of Germany’s most famous filmmakers and stimulating operatic directors focuses her creativity on a rarely performed Handel opera, the result is a “mixture of dancers and singers, comedy and pathos” (The Times). “Admeto”, one of Handel’s most popular operas in his lifetime, was premiered in London in January 1727. Doris Dörrie, whose Japan-inspired feature film “Cherry Blossoms – Hanami” was a major German box-office hit and won several international awards, returns to her beloved Japan in this production... Zeffirelli´s legendary 1981 Met staging with an allstar cast led by Teresa Stratas and José Carreras under the baton of Maestro James Levine
“With her fragile frame, cameo face and exquisitely modulated soprano, Stratas makes an ideal Mimi.” (The New York Times)
“One of the grandest, most richly textured productions of an opera to be seen anywhere”, wrote Christian Science Monitor, while New York Magazine lauded “Theresa Stratas´ potency as a dramatic presence and the sensitively refined artistry of her vocal performance…a true musician as well as an astute operatic actress.”
