Frontiers in Computing Technologies for Manufacturing Applications
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 1846289548 | edition 2007 | PDF | 317 pages | 5,88 mb

In today s competitive world, industries are focusing on shorter lead times, improved quality, reduced cost, increased profit, improved productivity and better customer service. As ERP and other information management systems have been widely implemented, information growth poses new challenges to decision makers in areas ranging from shop floor control to supply chain management and design.
Frontiers in Computing Technologies for Manufacturing Applications presents an overview of the state-of-the-art intelligent computing in manufacturing. Modeling, data processing, algorithms and computational analysis of difficult problems found in advanced manufacturing are discussed. It is the first book to bring together combinatorial optimization, information systems and fault diagnosis and monitoring in a consistent manner. Techniques are presented in order to aid decision makers needing to consider multiple, conflicting objectives in their decision processes. In particular, the use of metaheuristic optimization techniques for multi-objective problems is discussed. Readers will learn about computational technologies that can improve the performance of manufacturing systems ranging from manufacturing equipment to supply chains.

The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Problem: A Status Report (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540729941 | edition 2007 | PDF | 303 pages | 5,46 mb

The apparent contradiction of the results of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam experiment conducted in 1953 and 1954 with the hypothesis that essentially any nonlinearity would lead to a system exhibiting ergodic behavior has become known as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam Problem. This volume reviews the current understanding of this paradox without trying to force coherence on differing perspectives on the same problem by various groups or approaches. The contributions comprise studies of one-dimensional chains, descriptions of numerical methods, heuristic theories, addressing the 'long standing and controversial problem of distinguishing chaos from noise in signal analysis', metastability, the relation of the FPU motions with the integrable equations, approaches using methods of perturbation theory and the proof of the applicability of KAM theory in FPU chains with energy very close to a minimum. For the convenience of the reader the original work of FPU is reprinted in an appendix. The order of the contributions reflects the aim of leading the interested but inexperienced reader through gradual understanding, starting from general analysis, and proceeding towards more specialized topics.

Teaching Mathematics in Multilingual Classrooms (Mathematics Education Library, Volume 26)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0792370791 | edition 1999 | PDF | 187 pages | 1,43 mb

Increasingly, teachers all over the world are grappling on a daily basis with the fact of multilingual classrooms. In this book, Jill Adler captures three inter-related dilemmas that lie at the heart of teaching mathematics in multilingual classrooms. Adler's identification and naming of the dilemma of code-switching, the dilemma of mediation, and the dilemma of transparency, arise from exploring the realities of actual classrooms, and are shaped by a perspective of teaching as a social practice.
Adler provides a sharp analysis and strong theoretical grounding for her work, pulling together research related to the relationship between language and mathematics, communicating mathematics, and mathematics in bi-/multilingual settings. In so doing, she offers a direct challenge to dominant research on communication in mathematics classrooms that has `othered' the multilingual setting in its normalisation of the monolingual classroom. The `norm' is a multicultural one. Set in contemporary South Africa -- a context of linguistic diversity and rapid change -- this book offers a spotlight whose beam is wide enough to illuminate dilemmas at work in all mathematics classrooms.

Opening the Research Text: Critical Insights and In(ter)ventions into Mathematics Education (Mathematics Education Library)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387754636 | edition 2007 | PDF | 257 pages | 1,59 mb

The provocative contributions to "Opening the Research Text" reflect current interest in the political and cultural underpinnings of mathematics education. With 22 contributors including both established researchers and newcomers, this innovative research-oriented volume challenges traditional theories and 'comforting narratives' of pedagogy through realistic, non-linear scenarios reflecting the ambiguities and power relationships of the classroom. By alternating research chapters with inventive responses (including poetry, concept mapping, graphic novel, and collage), the editors present theoretical as well as practice-based possibilities in areas as diverse as arts-based inquiry and social justice pedagogy, all in relation to mathematics education. These multiple calls to action will inspire readers to: rethink the accessibility and impact of their classroom work; consider the value of post structuralist strategies to curriculum theory; explore alternate research paradigms in mathematics education; trace the intersections of power, economics and mathematics; critically examine the discourse of school mathematics and policy documents; and, engage in self-study, writing their own stories of insight and in(ter)vention. "Opening the Research Text" asks teachers, researchers and scholars to add to the dialog that is transforming the mathematics education field, and leads new educators toward insights into their careers and the students and communities they serve. Additionally, the book can be a primary graduate or supplementary undergraduate text in education or mathematics education.

Weighted Littlewood-Paley Theory and Exponential-Square Integrability (Lecture Notes in Mathematics)
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 3540745823 | edition 2007 | PDF | 232 pages | 2,16 mb

Littlewood-Paley theory is an essential tool of Fourier analysis, with applications and connections to PDEs, signal processing, and probability. It extends some of the benefits of orthogonality to situations where orthogonality doesn't really make sense. It does so by letting us control certain oscillatory infinite series of functions in terms of infinite series of non-negative functions. Beginning in the 1980s, it was discovered that this control could be made much sharper than was previously suspected. The present book tries to give a gentle, well-motivated introduction to those discoveries, the methods behind them, their consequences, and some of their applications.

Almost everyone in America knows how to use a telephone and almost everyone picks up a phone every day to make or answer a call. Unfortunately, almost no one understands their telephone bill. Worse: almost no one knows that they have been paying, for years, for services that they never ordered and that will probably never be delivered anytime soon. And we believe you're owed money — hundreds of dollars per-line.

The Pure Theory of Capital
Publisher: Ludwig von Mises Institute | ISBN: N\A | edition 2009 | PDF | 486 pages | 9,79 mb

The greatest failing of non-Austrians theories of macroeconomics, it's been said, is that they lack a robust theory of capital. F.A. Hayek sought to fill out the theory of the business cycle with an impenetrable one, and the result was this remarkable 1941 treatise. It took him many years to write. It is surely his most detailed work in economic theory.

In order to reach the more interesting and useful ideas, we shall adopt a fairly brutal approach to some early material. Lengthy proofs will sometimes be left out, though full versions will be made available. By the end of the course, you should have a good understanding of normed vector spaces, Hilbert and Banach spaces, fixed point theorems and examples of function spaces. These ideas will be illustrated with applications to differential equations.

Superstring Cosmology
Publisher: arXiv | ISBN: N\A | edition 2000 | PDF | 161 pages | 2,69 mb

Aspects of superstring cosmology are reviewed with an emphasis on the cosmological implications of duality symmetries in the theory. The string effective actions are summarized and toroidal compactification to four dimensions reviewed. Global symmetries that arise in the compactification are discussed and the duality relationships between the string effective actions are then highlighted.

Consciousness: Essays from a Higher-Order Perspective
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0199277362 | edition 2005 | PDF | 258 pages | 2,66 mb

Peter Carruthers's essays on consciousness and related issues have had a substantial impact on the field, and many of his best are now collected here in revised form. Together they develop, defend, and explore the implications of Carruthers's distinctive theory of experiential consciousness; they discuss the differences between conscious experiencing and conscious thinking; and, controversially, they consider what would follow, either for morality or for comparative psychology, if it should turn out that animals lack conscious experiences. This collection will be of great interest to anyone working in philosophy of mind or cognitive science.
