An Introduction to Airline Economics: Sixth Edition
Publisher: Praeger Publishers | ISBN: 0275969118 | edition 2000 | CHM | 272 pages | 1,3 mb

The fabric of the airline industry has continued to undergo remarkable changes since the 5th edition of this classic text was published in 1995. The industry has witnessed a series of mergers and a trend toward consolidation into fewer but larger airlines. Route patterns have been reconstructed around hub cities. In contrast to the early 1990s, which saw unprecedented operating deficits, the late 1990s have seen a swing to highly profitable operations, characterized by the forming of alliances among U.S. and foreign airlines. Revised substantially to cover these changes, this book is an excellent introduction to the economics of U.S. airline services, both domestic and international.

Thinking About Sexual Harassment: A Guide for the Perplexed
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0195140303 | edition 2000 | PDF | 328 pages | 11,6 mb

This illuminating work on one of today's most provocative issues provides all the necessary information for careful, critical thinking about the concept of sexual harassment. Consisting mainly of two parts, it first traces the construction of the concept of sexual harassment from the original public uses of the term to its definitions in the law, in legal cases, and in empirical research. It then analyzes philosophical definitions of sexual harassment and a number of issues that have arisen in the law, including the reasonable woman standard and whether same-sex harassment should be considered sex discrimination.

Lolita
Publisher: The Olympia Press | ISBN: 0739322060 | edition 1955 | PDF | 402 pages | 62 mb

When it was published in 1955, Lolita immediately became a cause célèbre because of the freedom and sophistication with which it handled the unusual erotic predilections of its protagonist. But Vladimir Nabokov's wise, ironic, elegant masterpiece owes its stature as one of the twentieth century's novels of record not to the controversy its material aroused but to its author's use of that material to tell a love story almost shocking in its beauty and tenderness.

Action in Perception
Publisher: The MIT Press | ISBN: 0262140888 | edition 2005 | PDF | 289 pages | 9,1 mb

To perceive, according to this enactive approach to perception, is not merely to have sensations; it is to have sensations that we understand. In Action in Perception, Noë investigates the forms this understanding can take. He begins by arguing, on both phenomenological and empirical grounds, that the content of perception is not like the content of a picture; the world is not given to consciousness all at once but is gained gradually by active inquiry and exploration. Noë then argues that perceptual experience acquires content thanks to our possession and exercise of practical bodily knowledge, and examines, among other topics, the problems posed by spatial content and the experience of color. He considers the perspectival aspect of the representational content of experience and assesses the place of thought and understanding in experience. Finally, he explores the implications of the enactive approach for our understanding of the neuroscience of perception.

Creative Destruction: How Globalization Is Changing the World's Cultures
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691117837 | edition 2004 | PDF | 192 pages | 3,9 mb

A Frenchman rents a Hollywood movie. A Thai schoolgirl mimics Madonna. Saddam Hussein chooses Frank Sinatra's "My Way" as the theme song for his fifty-fourth birthday. It is a commonplace that globalization is subverting local culture. But is it helping as much as it hurts? In this strikingly original treatment of a fiercely debated issue, Tyler Cowen makes a bold new case for a more sympathetic understanding of cross-cultural trade.

Descartes on Forms and Mechanisms
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 052151892X | edition 2009 | PDF | 246 pages | 100 mb

The modern view of causation can be traced back to the mechanistic science of Descartes, whose rejection of Aristotelian physics, with its concept of substantial forms, in favor of mechanical explanations was a turning-point in the history of philosophy. However the reasoning which led Descartes and other early moderns in this direction is not well understood. For the first time, this book traces Descartes' groundbreaking theory of scientific explanation back to the mathematical demonstrations of Aristotelian mechanics and interprets these advances in light of the available arguments for and against substantial forms. It also examines how Descartes' new theory led him to develop a metaphysical foundation for his science that could avoid skeptical objections. It will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in the philosophy and science of the early modern period.

Daosim
Publisher: Chelsea House Publications | ISBN: 1604131152 | edition 2009 | PDF | 144 pages | 8,1 mb

Daoism is one of the great philosophical and religious traditions that grew and flowered in China. Unlike the great Western religions, Daoism has no one God or even a founding prophet. One of its central beliefs is that each person must follow his or her own path to the Dao, or 'Way of Life.' By being so universal and yet so personal, Daoism has exerted a significant influence on the spiritual life of many cultures both in Asia and throughout the world. "Daoism, Third Edition" traces the progress of Daoist thought, from the great Daodejing, or "The Book of the Way and Its Power" by Laozi, to the contemporary "Tao of Physics" by Fritjof Capra. This revised edition also examines the restoration of Daoism under China's religious freedom clause, the slow rebirth of Daoist monasticism, renewed interest in Daoism in China and abroad, and the impact of tourism on the monastic tradition. Coverage includes: meditation and the concept of wuwei; Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism; the growth and spread of religious Daoism; art and literature within Daoism; and political turbulence in the 20th century.

New Directions in Neural Networks
Publisher: IOS Press | ISBN: 1586039849 | edition 2009 | PDF | 270 pages | 11,5 mb

The book is a collection of selected papers from the 18th WIRN workshop, the annual meeting of the Italian Neural Networks Society (SIREN). As the number 18 marks the year young people come of age in Italy, the society invited two generations of researchers to participate in a discussion on neural networks: those new to the field and those with extensive familiarity with the neural paradigm. The challenge laid in understanding what remains of the revolutionary ideas from which neural networks stemmed in the eighties, how these networks have evolved and influenced other research fields, and ultimately, what the new conceptual/methodological frontiers are that need to be trespassed for a better exploitation of the information carried by data. This book presents the outcome of this discussion. New Directions in Neural Networks is divided in two general subjects, models and applications and two specific ones, economy and complexity and remote sensing image processing. The editors of this book have set out to publish a scientific contribution to the discovery of new forms of cooperative work that are necessary today for the invention of efficient computational systems and new social paradigms.

The Social and Economic History of the Hellenistic World
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0198142307 | edition 1986 | PDF | 1824 pages | 33,5 mb

n short, this book is a masterpiece of historical scholarship. Rostovtzeff describes every aspect of socioeconomic life throughout Roman civilization from the Julio-Claudians through Diocletian in a wonderful narrative. It is hard to imagine that a book primarily concerned with how people feed and clothe themselves can be an engrossing page-turner, but this book is. If you are at all interested in the history of real people, you must read this book.
