Baptiste Trotignon - Share (2009)
Jazz | EAC Rip | FLAC (image)+CUE+LOG | mp3@320 | 346 MB. & 138 MB.

Audio CD (2009) | Label: naive | Catalog# NV-814611 | 58:32 min.

At first impression, post-bop pianist/composer Baptiste Trotignon looks like a newcomer to the jazz scene, though he has recorded a number of CD since the mid-'90s as a leader on the Naive label. He will likely benefit from the wider distribution of his Sunnyside debut, which features Trotignon playing 11 originals with various lineups. A gifted pianist who shows lots of promise, Trotignon's works hold up well to repeated hearings, engaging his rhythm section and telling a story in the process, highlighted by the catchy "Mon Ange," and the wild uptempo blues "Red Light District."

Milt Jackson - Mostly Duke (1998)
Jazz | EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks)+CUE+LOG | 261 MB.

Audio CD (1998) | Label: Pablo/OJC | Catalog# OJCCD-968-2 (2310-944) | 47:30 min.

The third of three sets released by Pablo from Milt Jackson's engagement at Ronnie Scott's Club in London in 1982 (this CD first came out in 1991) lives up to its title. The great vibraphonist, pianist Monty Alexander, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Mickey Roker play two standards, the leader's "Used to Be Jackson" and six songs associated with Duke Ellington. The music swings hard, Alexander competes with Bags for solo honors and the music should please all straightahead jazz fans.

Throughout his career, Zoot Sims was famous for epitomizing the swinging musician, never playing an inappropriate phrase. He always sounded inspired, and although his style did not change much after the early 1950s, Zoot's enthusiasm and creativity never wavered.

Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie - A Classy Pair (1991)

Audio CD (1991) | Label: Pablo Today | Catalog# 0002521-8013222 | 40:16 min.

"A Classy Pair" is a most apt title for this session, which features Ella Fitzgerald and the final incarnation of the Count Basie Orchestra, perhaps the last major big band to exist under the baton of its namesake. Recorded in February 1979 and produced by the legendary Norman Granz, these nine tracks show Fitzgerald in a somewhat better light than the orchestra.

Tina Brooks - The Waiting Game (2002)
Jazz | EAC Rip | APE (image)+CUE+LOG | mp3@320 | 295 MB. & 107 MB.

Audio CD (2002) | Label: Capitol/Blue Note | Catalog# 7243-5-40536-2-7 | 39:43 min.

Like two of his other three albums, Tina Brooks' final session as a leader (in March 1961) was sequenced and prepared for release, but remained on the shelves until well after the tenor's tragically early death. That's why the title of The Waiting Game is not only apt, but sadly poignant. Despite Blue Note's reservations at the time, Brooks' output for the label was uniformly strong, demonstrating his skills as a smooth, graceful soloist and a composer of considerable dexterity within the hard bop idiom.

Frank Morgan - Listen to the Dawn (1994)
Jazz | EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks)+CUE+LOG | 275 MB.

Audio CD (1994) | Label: PolyGram/Verve | Catalog# 314 518 979-2 | 52:37 min.

"Listen to the Dawn" is a rare example of Frank Morgan recording an entire album without a pianist. The veteran alto saxophonist, who was only two weeks away from his 60th birthday when this post-bop/be bop CD was recorded, evidently wanted to try something a bit different -- and it was a move that paid off creatively. Whether he's forming an intimate duo with guitarist Kenny Burrell or forming a quartet with Burrell, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate, Morgan fares quite well without a pianist.

Audio CD (1992) | Label: Riverside/OJC | Catalog# 002521-8610728 | 46:55 min.

Having been a major part of Stan Getz's very popular Jazz Samba album, it was only fitting that guitarist Charlie Byrd would start recording his own bossa nova records. This CD reissue brings back the 12 songs originally on the Riverside LP Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros plus six of the 11 tunes from Once More! Bossa Nova. Byrd and his trio (which included bassist Keter Betts and drummer Bill Reichenbach) are augmented on some selections by strings, extra percussion, plus horns.

Sonny Clark Trio - Blues in the Night (2004)

Audio CD (2004) | Label: Blue Note/Toshiba-EMI | Catalog# TOCJ-1618 | 34:01 min.

The piano trio material included in this Japanese reissue, along with another session from late 1958 (see The Art of the Trio, aka "The 45 Sessions"), constitutes a body of work which was never released in LP format during Sonny Clark's tragically short life. Clark was an underrated master of the hard bop genre who had a very subtle, artful touch.

June Christy - Ballads for Night People/The Intimate Miss Christy (1999)
Jazz (Vocal) | EAC Rip | FLAC (image)+CUE+LOG | mp3@320 | 348 MB. & 166 MB.
300dpi. Complete Scans (JPG) - 17 MB. | WinRar, 3% recovery
Audio CD (1999) | Label: Capitol/EMI | Catalog# 7243-4-96728-2-6 | 70:39 min.

This is another swell two-for-one album pairing from the British wing of EMI. This one features two of June Christy's classic Capitol recordings, each of which showcases her in small-group jazz settings. The superior Ballads for Night People features Christy backed by a superb cool jazz group led by her husband, Bob Cooper. As befits its title, this session is generally dark in tone but it also really swings. The Intimate Miss Christy is more warmly romantic and finds the vocalist backed only by guitar, bass, and the occasional flute. This one is geared more toward fireside smooching then Christy's usual nocturnal regret or daylight exuberance. Christy was always a great interpretive vocalist, but she was at her most relaxed and natural in the type of small-group jazz settings that are featured on these two albums.

Richard Holmes & Gene Ammons - Groovin' with Jug (1989)
Jazz | EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks)+CUE+LOG | mp3@320 | 337 MB. & 138 MB.
300dpi. Complete Scans (JPG) included | WinRar, 3% recovery
Audio CD (1989) | Label: Capitol/Pacific Jazz | Catalog# CDP-7-92930-2 | 54:33 min.

Ironically, Gene "Jug" Ammons tended to be critical of organists; he was quoted as saying that "organ players don't know any changes." However, as critical the Chicago tenor saxman might have been of organists -- most of them, anyway -- he did some of his best work in their presence. When you united Ammons with Jack McDuff, Johnny "Hammond" Smith and other B-3 masters in the '60s, the sparks would fly. They certainly fly on this excellent album, which finds Ammons and Richard "Groove" Holmes co-leading a soul-jazz/hard bop organ combo that also includes guitarist Gene Edwards and drummer Leroy Henderson.

Oscar Peterson - The Paris Concert: Salle Pleyel, 1978 [2CD] (1995)

Audio CD (1995) | Label: Pablo | Catalog# 2PACD-2620-112 | 42:29 + 49:51 min.

Pianist Oscar Peterson made so many recordings for Norman Granz's Pablo label (and was so consistent) that while all of his records are recommended, it is difficult to pick out any one as the definitive or essential release. This two-CD set (a straight reissue of the original two-LP release) features Peterson with an all-star trio, a unit comprised of guitarist Joe Pass and bassist Niels Pedersen. Just 16 days later Peterson would record The London Concert with a different trio. This time around he mostly sticks to standards but includes three songs associated with Benny Goodman (including the riff-filled "Benny's Bugle"), features Pass (who contributed his original "Gentle Tears") unaccompanied on "Lover Man" and really romps with his fellow virtuosoes on such numbers as "Ornithology," "Donna Lee" and "Sweet Georgia Brown."

Audio CD (1991) | Label: Capitol/Blue Note | Catalog# CDP-7-84250-2 | 39:42 min.

Following the subtly modern bent of much of The Cape Verdean Blues, Horace Silver recommitted himself to his trademark "funky jazz" sound on The Jody Grind. Yet he also consciously chose to keep a superbly advanced front line, with players like trumpeter Woody Shaw (retained from the Cape Verdean session), altoist/flutist James Spaulding, and tenor saxophonist Tyrone Washington.
