Guitarist Pat Martino's first five recordings as a leader were made for the Prestige label, and this one (the fifth) has been reissued on CD by Original Jazz Classics. Martino performs Sonny Rollins' "Oleo" and five of his originals, using the 12-string guitar. The rhythm section (keyboardist Eddie Green, electric bassist Tyrone Brown, and drummer Sherman Ferguson) is funky in spots, electric, and swinging when called for. Eric Kloss makes a guest appearance on soprano for the opening "Blackjack," but otherwise, most of the focus is on Martino's consistently inventive playing. – Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

"Album number four from the Wellington, New Zealand, jazz trio known as Twinset finds the Yeabsley brothers (Christopher on organ and Daniel on saxophone) and drummer Paul Hoskin moving back to the denser instrumental "boogaloo" sound of their superb 'It's A Summer Feeling' album. Hoskin's subtle yet busy rhythmic drumming and the deep minimal funk of Yeabsley's organ power the swingin' Blue Note inspired tunes (think Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff etc), while the second Yeabsley adds colourful and inspired tenor, alto and soprano sax flourishes as required. The album has a tougher (and welcome) overall sound also, reflecting the trio's growing maturity in the studio (the album is self produced) and the influential assistance of both Nick McGowan (recording engineer) and The Drop's Mu (mastering). Easily the best New Zealand jazz record I have heard in 2004, 'Lifestyle' should find plenty of fans throughout this summer - and deservedly so. Recommended."

"...During a 30-year recording career of many highs and a few lows, Footprints stands as one of Pat Martino's very best. The musicianship is superior, dynamic and attention grabbing. Best of all, this ideal quartet's interplay is outstanding and often astounding. Very highly recommended."

This is the record that put the legendary Ramsey Lewis on the map. Lewis is known as an incredible stylist on piano, comfortably adapting almost any kind of music into his own jazz fusion vision. Film scores, pop, light classical hall fit comfortably into his music, and this album is an excellent example of his vision. But, it's not only Lewis alone. His absolutely fabulous rhythm section of Red Holt (drums) and Eldee Young on (bass/cello) frame all of Ramsey's performances with funk and grace and a superior forward momentum. Aside from the groovin' hit "The in Crowd," the album contains fantastic readings of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday" and the "Love Theme From Spartacus." This album is one of the places where Afro and funk-jazz started, and aside from it's historical significance, it's a stone groove.

"Recorded early in Martino's career, this album consistently ranks among my top five jazz albums of all time. Martino's playing is full and accomplished, even at the tender age of 22. The robust, driving style of organist Trudy Pitts provides accompaniment that is at once vibrant and powerful as she pulls the color and majesty from the Hammond B3 that has made it legendary. Danny Turner's light and lively flute playing stands in sharp contrast to the thunderous force of the music overall and provides a remarkably successful counterpoint. The band combines for memorable performances of Martino originals and standards, most notably one of the finest instrumental renditions of Monk’s “Just Friends” ever recorded. Highly recommended for all fans of the underrated jazz guitar/organ idiom."
