Publisher: Natl Science Teachers Assn | Edition: 2006 | ISBN: 0873552725 | PDF | 200 pages | 2,57 Mb

Millions of years after vanishing from the Earth, dinosaurs still have the power to stir studentsA’ curiosity. Deepen that interest with Adventures in Paleontology, a series of lively hands-on activities especially for middle schoolers. This beautifully illustrated full color book features 36 activities that open students up to a variety of foundational sciences, including biology, geology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy. For example: A• A“How Do Fossils Form?A” discusses how organisms become fossils and illustrates the concept with activities that simulate fossil-making processes. A• A“What Can You Learn From Fossils?A” explores what fossils teach about ancient organisms. A• A“Mass Extinction and Meteor Collisions With EarthA” discusses recently discovered links between meteor and asteroid impacts on Earth and the demise of animals like dinosaurs. Other chapters cover how to tell the age of the Earth; how dinosaurs evolved; and diversity, classification, and taxonomy.! The final chapters offer humanistic perspectives on fossils in literature and art. As an attention-grabbing complement to the text, vivid full color illustrations show not just skeletons and animal tracks but also what dinosaurs probably looked like in their natural settings. Handy line drawings guide students through each step of the activities.

Rene Chartrand «Louis XIV's Army (Men-At-Arms Series, 203) »
Publisher: Osprey Publishing | Edition: 1988 | ISBN: 0850458501 | PDF | 48 pages | 7,88 Mb

Louis XIV's army was in many ways the first modern army. After assuming power in 1661, Louis abolished the post of Colonel General of Infantry so he could exercise direct control over the armed forces in his realm. The king demanded order, discipline and absolute loyalty from his army, and he introduced a military draft in 1688 - the first step towards what we know as conscription in modern armies. This book chronicles the development of Louis XIV's army during his 54-year reign, including the units, uniforms and weapons of the elite Maison du Roi. Numerous illustrations portray the uniforms, colours and standards of his troops in vivid detail.

David Kelly, Cullen Jennings, Luan Dang «Practical VoIP Using VOCAL»
Publisher: O'Reilly Media, Inc. | Edition: 2002 | ISBN: 0596000782 | PDF | 648 pages | 4,13 Mb

While many books describe the theory behind Voice over IP, only Practical VoIP Using VOCAL describes how such a phone system was actually built, and how you too can acquire the source code, install it onto a system, connect phones, and make calls. VOCAL (the Vovida Open Communication Application Library) is an open source software project that provides call control, routing, media, policy, billing information and provisioning on a system that can range from a few test phones to a large, multi-host carrier grade network supporting hundreds of thousands of users. VOCAL is freely available from the Cisco Systems-sponsored Vovida.Because VOCAL is open source, you can look "under the hood" to the base code and protocol stack levels and discover not only how the system works, but also how common problems are being worked out in the development environment. You can take this system to another level by implementing a feature or functionality that no one's thought of before.

R. E. Davis «Truth, Deduction, and Computation: Logic and Semantics for Computer Science (Principles of Computer Science Series)»
Publisher: W.H. Freeman & Company | Edition: 1989 | ISBN: 0716782014 | PDF | 220 pages | 9,63 Mb

Having used this book to teach courses in elementary model theory, I can attest to its utility. It serves this purpose well, and the book is short enough to allow covering most of the material in the span of a semester. After finishing it, readers will be well prepared to tackle more advanced books in mathematical logic and model theory, or move into areas of artificial intelligence or logic programming. The most popular languages in artificial intelligence, namely LISP and PROLOG are based on the concepts in this book. Some of the areas that are not treated but can be accessed after reading the book include nonmonotonic logics, inductive logic programming, formal learning theory, higher-order languages, automated deduction, and the theory of object-oriented languages.

Robert, F Hebert, Albert, N Link «Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur (Foundations and Trends(R) in Entrepreneurship)»
Publisher: Now Publishers Inc | Edition: 2007 | ISBN: 1933019441 | PDF | 168 pages | 1,45 Mb

Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur preserves a vital historical perspective by chronologically tracing the entrepreneur in the economic literature to give a complete perspective to contemporary writings and teachings on entrepreneurship. It reviews the historical nature and role of the entrepreneur as described and analyzed in economic literature from the eighteenth century to the present. Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur shows how Joseph Schumpeter changed the ambiguous nature of a concept of the entrepreneur to that which now occupies a primary role in the theory of economic development. It also examines other conceptions of entrepreneurship besides Schumpeter's including the many different facets of entrepreneurship as they have been perceived by some of the great economists throughout the ages. Finally, it illustrates the tension that often exists between "theory" and "practice." Historical Perspectives on the Entrepreneur should be required reading for all students of economics and those interested in entrepreneurship practice.

Erling Eide, Paul H. Rubin, Joanna M. Shepherd «Economics of Crime (Foundations and Trends(R) in Microeconomics)»
Publisher: Now Publishers Inc | Edition: 2006 | ISBN: 1933019484 | PDF | 92 pages | 1,22 Mb

Economics of Crime presents the basic model of criminal behavior and law enforcement. The authors start by reviewing the economics of criminal behavior. Models of criminal behavior applying the model of individual rational behavior are presented. Empirical studies surveyed use regression analyses and employ data from states and police regions down to individuals. These studies tend to support the hypothesis that the probability of punishment and the severity of punishment have a deterrent effect on crime. Methodological problems relating to the assumption of rationality, statistical identification of equations, measurement errors, and operationalization of theoretical variables are discussed. Economics of Crime also review the theory of public enforcement including probability and severity, fines and imprisonment, repeat offenders, incentives of enforcers, enforcement costs and enforcement errors. Economics of Crime is intended for economists and lawyers, practitioners, scholars and students in the field of law and economics, microeconomics, and criminology who wish to learn the basics of the economics of crime, criminal behavior, and law enforcement.
Retargetable Processor System Integration into Multi-Processor System-on-Chip Platforms

Andreas Wieferink, Heinrich Meyr, Rainer Leupers «Retargetable Processor System Integration into Multi-Processor System-on-Chip Platforms»
Publisher: Springer | Edition: 2008 | ISBN: 1402085745 | PDF | 176 pages | 6,08 Mb

The ever increasing complexity of modern electronic devices together with the continually shrinking time-to-market and product lifetimes pose enormous chip design challenges to meet flexibility, performance and energy efficiency constraints. As a consequence, the current trend is towards programmable platforms (Multi-Processor System-on-Chip Platforms, MP-SoC), which are tailored to the respective target application. In the usual case, a new platform is designed by selecting and assembling standard platform elements.
Topics in Applied Macrodynamic Theory (Dynamic Modeling and Econometrics in Economics and Finance)

Peter Flaschel, Gangolf Groh, Christian Proano, Willi Semmler «Topics in Applied Macrodynamic Theory (Dynamic Modeling and Econometrics in Economics and Finance)»
Publisher: Springer | Edition: 2008 | ISBN: 3540725415 | PDF | 512 pages | 7,71 Mb

This book presents topics in applied dynamic macrotheory for closed and open economies. The authors give an advanced treatment of macroeconomic topics such as the Phillips curve, forward and backward looking behavior, open economy macrodynamics, structural macroeconometric model building as well as the empirics of Keynesian oriented macro models. They start from the closed economy and consider open economies for fixed and flexible exchange rate systems with free international capital flows later on. The dynamics of open economies in the context of interacting two country models are treated as well. The macrofounded approach extends and integrates non-market-clearing traditions in macrodynamics. It is compared to New Keynesian approaches which are generally rigorously microfounded, but often neglect to study macroeconomic feedback mechanisms (that may be stabilizing or destabilizing).
